With over 200 products to choose from, ranging from small, boot scooters to large, road legal (Class 3) scooters and powered wheelchairs, you can be sure to find the right one for you. Part of your allowance will then be paid directly to Motability Operations every four weeks, in exchange for your scooter or powered wheelchair. And most of the models available cost less than your four weekly higher rate mobility allowance, which means you get some money back!
How do I get started?
Are you eligible?
If you receive the ‘higher’ rate of disability living allowance, the ‘enhanced’ Personal Independence or a War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement you can use part of it to get a Scooter or Power Wheelchair that suits your needs.
Types of Scooters
A Mobility scooter, rather than a Powered wheelchair, is probably the right choice if you can travel relatively independently, get on and off the scooter on your own, and are able to use a bicycle style steering column/tiller. Mobility scooters fall into 3 main categories.Portable, mid-range and 8 mph larger, deluxe scooters. We offer free home assessments and demonstrations to ensure the most suitable scooter is provided.
Types of powered wheelchairs
A Powerchair/Powered wheelchair, rather than a scooter, may be a more suitable product for you if you need to stay in your wheelchair throughout the day, have restricted mobility in one or both hands, require mobility assistance around the home or are unable to transfer on and off a seat easily.
All this is included for your peace of mind:

- Standard pricing nationwide
- 24/7 365 days breakdown home recovery service
- Fully comprehensive insurance cover
- All Servicing, maintenance and repairs

Benefits of joining the Powered Wheelchair and Scooter Scheme
If you are interested in a scooter or powered wheelchair, all this is included in your lease:
A new scooter or powered wheelchair of your choice every three years
With Motability you get a brand new scooter or powered wheelchair every three years. There are over 300 products to choose from, most of which cost less than your allowance, so there is bound to be one to suit your needs and budget.
Help from specialist dealers
We work with a nationwide network of dealers to ensure that no matter where you live in the UK, there are people who can visit you to discuss the products available, as well as provide servicing, maintenance and repairs throughout your lease. All our dealers have attended specialist training and are continually updated to ensure they know about all aspects of Motability.
Insurance from RSA Motability (RSAM)
You are covered in case of an accident, damage or theft of the product , with no excess to pay. The insurance also covers you against any damage caused by your scooter or powered wheelchair to other products, property or people.
Breakdown assistance from Motability Assist
Motability Assist will take you and your product back to your home address if you have an accident or breakdown during your day-to-day activities. If you are on holiday or away from home with your product within the UK and need assistance, Motability Assist will take you and your product back to your local accommodation.
Servicing, maintenance and repairs
Call-outs and home collections can be arranged with your dealer.
There is no need to worry about punctures or damage to your tyres as they are repaired or replaced whenever there is a problem. If you are out and about when you get a puncture preventing you from being able to get home safely, our partners at Motability Assist will help get you, and your scooter or powered wheelchair home where you can arrange for your dealer to repair or mend the tyre for you.
Your scooter will come with a battery as standard so all you have to do is remember to keep it charged. You dealer will be able to show you how to do this properly ensuring your battery lasts as long as possible and, if anything goes wrong with the battery through normal every day use, it will be replaced, free of charge.
The majority of scooters and many powered wheelchairs come as standard from the manufacturer (except in cases of custom-built powered wheelchairs). If you need additional adaptations, speak to your dealer to discuss prices and details. All our scooters come with a weatherproof cover as standard, so your scooter stays dry – whatever the weather.
What’s not included?
There are some things that are not included:
- Optional extras on the product that are not fitted as standard
- More than three claims for lost or stolen keys
- Any fines you may incur
- Insurance cover for theft or damage to personal belongings such as coats, bags, mobile phones and money.
Remember, you can choose to spend your higher rate mobility allowance in whatever way you wish. If you only travel short distances, you might want to consider leasing a Motability scooter instead of a car. However, if you only travel occasionally, it might be more cost-effective for you to spend your allowance on other modes of transport such as taxis. Organisations such as Disability Rights UK and Rica produce high quality information on a number of accessible mobility solutions.
